But it’s the story of the usual diverse group of young men going through Marine Corps boot camp and radio school. The Marines from boot camp to Tarawa- in superb narration. There are many memorable moments in the film and Uris’ varied characters are well represented.

As an adult I found it simpler and more straight forward than I remembered and not quite as emotional. This picture proves that you don’t have to have sex, violence and brutality to be good. A group of misfits – boys really – who volunteered for the Marines who at the end were men of glory and courage.
